Upcoming Fundraisers

Country for Kids 2013 will take place on April 26th at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton, VA.

Country for Kids 2013, presented by GTI Systems, is an annual charity concert to benefit the Center for Child & Family Services in Williamsburg & Hampton, Virginia.

Country for Kids is now in its 13th year and we have been privileged to have some of the hottest stars in country music perform; such as, Keith Urban, Jo Dee Messina, Gary Allan, Tracy Lawrence, Phil Vassar, Chris Cagle, Emerson Drive, Jessica Andrews, Andy Griggs, Rodney Atkins, & Craig Morgan.

Through the generosity of corporate sponsors and ticket-buyers, we have been able to raise over $427,000 in net proceeds over the past twelve years. These funds have helped support our much needed programs and allowed us to see over 10,000 children and families each year.

Thank you to these fine sponsors for their generous donations; GTI Systems, The Old Point National Bank, BayPort Federal Credit Union, Coliseum Central, David A. Nice Builders, Charles Barker Lexus, Hooters, Hampton Roads Convention Center, Embassy Suites, State Farm; Jack Lubore Agent, Lackey Saunders Insurance, WTKR News Channel 3, 97.3 The Eagle, 106.1 America's Country, Joe Palentino Plumbing.

Behavioral Health

Virginia Resource Mother's Program

In the early fall, Center for Child & Family Services was awarded a grant to assist pregnant teens in Hampton, VA .The purpose of the Virginia Resource Mothers Program is to improve birth outcomes for teen mothers and their infants and to decrease infant mortality.  The program provides intensive home visiting services through trained lay mentors during the prenatal months through the infant's first birthday.  The goals are to decrease infant mortality and morbidity, decrease the rate of low birth weight babies born each year, and prevent repeat pregnancy in the teen years.

Services Provided:  Through the supportive relationship with the community health worker (CHW)/resource mother and the resource mother's modeling of certain behaviors/skills, the teen is provided new information about:

  • Prenatal care and pregnancy.* Child development and child care.
  • Health behaviors.* Developing skills on relationships and making constructive choices.
  • Finishing school and finding employment in order to provide for the new family unit. Our goal is to serve 30 teens this year.

The community can help by donating baby and maternity items.  If you, or someone you know could benefit from this program, please call Lauren Hentnik, program coordinator at 757 838 1960 ext. 334.

PATTS:   Peaceful Alternatives to Tough Situations

Peaceful Alternatives to Tough Situations (PATTS) utilizes group instruction and role play to help youth learn nonviolent conflict resolution skills, demonstrate more forgiveness in conflict situations and take responsibility for their choices and behavior. This program was developed to focus on youth learning appropriate expression of their emotions since a growing body of research is indicating that many aggressive children are actually depressed and traumatized children. PATTS adopts the perspective that many aggressive children have exceptional leadership qualities that need to be redirected into more socially acceptable behavior.

Aggressive children often time have not had the guidance and support from their families, neighborhoods, and peers to utilize nonviolent conflict resolution skills. PATTS groups are designed to encourage peer support and reinforcement of positive behaviors and choices. Learning is encouraged through brainstorming sessions, activities and role plays.

Recently PATTS has become an evidence based program approved by SAMHSA.   We have been able to copyright the program and sell it to various programs around the country.

The Center is proud to say that PATTS is now in 23 states and 2 International (Canada) locations, 67 different agencies!

Most recently, in November 2012, our PATTS trainers went to Central Toronto Youth Services -a community mental health agency.    There, our trainers trained 36 professionals.

PATTS Photo w/ellen This January, our trainers went to the Lafourche Parish School District located in Thibodaux Louisiana & sold 10 curriculum to their program as well.

We are excited about the future of our PATTS program & all the youth that are being helped as a result of it. Please visit our PATTS website for more information at www.patts.info

In Other News

The Center for Child & Family Services is celebrating our 70th Anniversary this year! This is 70 years of serving families in need in our community since 1943. We began in late 1943 in response to the wartime need for professional counseling services for disrupted families.

Over the years, we have evolved to include 2 other programs, Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Hampton Roads & Child & Family Connection, a childcare resource & referral program.

We have served thousands of members in our community and pride ourselves in being one of the best kept secrets (due to a limited marketing budget!!)

If you have been touched by our agency or have heard about the great things that happen here at the Center, please share with family & friends. Word of mouth is the best advertising as the saying goes!

If you would like to learn more about our agency, please visit us online at www.kidsandfamilies.com, stop by or give us a call! We would love to be able to share with you the many success stories we have of helping people in our community.
